Philosophy of the ARC Education Program
ARC provides each student with the opportunity to develop life-long learning behaviors in the areas of: (1) academic knowledge; (2) self-awareness; (3) social skills; (4) decision making; and (5) social norms and values. These learning experiences lead to: (1) academic achievement; (2) changes in behavior; (3) growth in knowledge of how to live in society; (4) respect for human individuality; and (5) the development of social skills and social values.
Description of the ARC Education Program
Course Curriculum
ARC’s education program provides 6 hours of academic studies each day. This amount of education meets the requirements established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The daily schedule consists of eight periods that are forty minutes each and one period of twenty minutes. The daily education program includes six major academic subjects: 1) English, 2) Math, 3) Social Studies, 4) Science, 5) Health, 6) Personal Development. The education program also includes: 1) Physical Education, 2) Career Development, 3) Home Maintenance, 4) Art, 5) Culinary Arts, 6) Field Trips.

Academic Goals
ARC provides three education programs:
1)
Preparation for return to the public school; Preparation for the GED; and Independent living skills for students who cannot accomplish either of the above goals in a regular school setting.
2) GED Testing - Student’s whose age or grade level is not conducive to matriculate or return to the regular school setting will be eligible for GED testing. To be eligible for GED testing by the local school district, a student must have the following:

  1. A recommendation from the classroom teacher. The student will have scored a minimum of 215 on the practice tests, average of 43 or better on each subject, before being recommended by the classroom teacher.
  2. The recommendation for GED testing will be made during a staff meeting and after a thorough discussion, the staff will determine if the student should be permitted to take the GED.
3) Employment & Independent Living Skills - Students who are not appropriate for matriculation, and are unable to meet the requirements of GED testing will be eligible to participate in employment and independent living instruction in the Aftercare Program.
